Responsive Web Design Checklist for Every Page Template
Test every page template across realistic content, devices and interaction states with this responsive web design checklist.
Responsive quality depends on components, content and interaction states, not a few popular screen widths. A layout that works with placeholder copy may fail when a real title wraps, an error appears or navigation contains another item.
Test layout boundaries
Check from small phones through tablets, laptops and wide screens. Look for overflow, awkward empty space, clipped controls and grid items that become too narrow. Test long names, translated text, empty states and the maximum expected number of items.
Review typography and media
Text should remain readable with user zoom and browser font settings. Images need appropriate crops, dimensions and alternatives. Video, maps and embedded content should stay within their containers and provide accessible controls where applicable.
Exercise interaction states
Open menus, accordions, modals, filters and validation messages. Use keyboard navigation and screen rotation. Confirm hover-dependent information is also available through touch and focus, and that fixed elements do not block content.
Test complete templates
Cover the homepage, listing, detail, article, search, form, account and error templates that exist. Test loading, empty, success and failure states. Record the device, width and reproducible steps for each issue so fixes can be verified.
- Representative widths and real devices
- Long, short and missing content
- Keyboard, touch, zoom and orientation
- Menus, forms, tables, dialogs and embeds
- Loading, empty, error and success states
Key takeaway
Responsive QA is a matrix of templates and states. Prioritize high-traffic and conversion journeys, then verify shared components across the whole site.
