Website Migration Checklist: How to Move Without Losing Traffic
Protect content, URLs, analytics, email and search visibility with a structured website hosting or platform migration plan.
A website migration may involve hosting, domain, CMS, framework, design or URL changes. Risk rises when several of these happen at once. A written inventory and rollback plan help the team protect both business operations and organic search visibility.
Create a pre-migration inventory
Crawl the current site and export important URLs, titles, canonical tags, redirects and status codes. Record analytics, search performance, forms, integrations, DNS records, email settings and third-party scripts. Take verified backups of files and databases.
Preserve valuable URLs
Keep existing paths when they remain accurate. When a URL must change, map it to the closest relevant destination with a permanent redirect. Avoid sending every retired page to the homepage; that is unhelpful to visitors and search engines.
Test before DNS changes
Use a staging or preview environment to verify templates, mobile behaviour, forms, checkout, authentication, media, metadata and structured data. Prevent the preview environment from being indexed and make sure that restriction will not remain on production.
Monitor the release
After launch, test redirects and priority journeys from outside the development environment. Submit the correct sitemap, inspect crawl and indexing reports, monitor server errors and compare traffic and conversions with the baseline. Keep the old environment available long enough for an agreed rollback window.
- Verify HTTPS and one preferred hostname
- Confirm analytics and conversion events
- Check email and form delivery
- Review 404s, redirects and search coverage
Key takeaway
Migration quality is determined by preparation and verification. Move one controlled system at a time when possible and retain evidence for fast diagnosis.
